The Baldwin Building

The Center’s main building is located on the historic “Baldwin Block” in Uptown Martinsville. A modern, state-of-the-art building purchased by the Commonwealth in 2020, it supports a mix of classrooms, a lecture hall, and office spaces, as well an hi-bay to suit a wide variety of community and learning needs. The Martin-Lacy Lecture Hall, classrooms, outdoor plaza and more are available for rent at affordable rates.
Honoring Dr. Dana O. Baldwin (1881-1972)
For many years, Dr. Dana O. Baldwin was Martinsville’s only African-American physician. A high school graduate at 16, Dr. Baldwin earned his medical degree from Leonard Medical College of Shaw University in 1910. Licensed by the Virginia State Board of Medical Examiners that year, he established his practice in Martinsville. Baldwin volunteered for the Army Medical Reserve Corps when the United States entered World War I and was commissioned a first lieutenant, serving in France with the 317th Sanitary Train of the 92d Division.
After returning home in 1919, Baldwin acquired property around his medical practice to spur economic development within Martinsville’s African-American community. He established several businesses, including brick-making and garment factories. He also open Saint Mary’s Hospital, where he treated anyone who needed medical attention. “Baldwin’s Block,” with its restaurants, hotel, barber shop, beauty parlor, dental practice, pharmacy, and theater, became the social and commercial hub for African Americans in the vicinity. Baldwin also operated the nearby Sandy Beach Resort and created the June German Ball, an annual social event and dance with noted entertainers, including Duke Ellington. Today the Center’s Baldwin Building stands on Baldwin Block. The City of Martinsville also maintains the Dr. Dana O. Baldwin Memorial Park in honor of his legacy.
King Hall Testing Center

King Hall Testing Center, named in honor of Dr. Mervyn King and located in Uptown Martinsville’s historic Courthouse Square, provides secure, accessible testing services through multiple test sponsors, supporting academic and workforce development for the West Piedmont region. The Testing Center is a proud member of the National College Testing Association and adheres to the NCTA Professional Standards and Guidelines. King Hall also houses the City of Martinsville’s Adult Education program, the National Society of Black Engineers, Jr. programming, and offices and classroom spaces.
Fayette Lab

The Fayette Lab is home to the Center’s FIRST Robotics Competition Team 1262, the STAGS and also houses a modern wet lab for K-12 programming and other trainings.
